Summertime
Experimental doc. | hdv | color | 24:36 | France | 2018

This film is about birds and dreams. Birds dream is shot using stop-motion technique, and its ‘actors’ are bird models handcrafted by the artist. Its concept derives from the artist’s own live performance the Sparrow and the Raven (2012). Story: A new-born sparrow entered a strange world. When curiously idling in this world, the sparrow found a young raven with which it began to explore the place together. They encountered all sorts of strange birds and mysterious geometric shapes of different colours. Their encounters have made them bewilder and fantasise, soon their body start to change as well…

Combining found footage of Thailand during the Cold War with present-day images of Bangkok, the film reminds her of anecdotes she heard from the woman she works for and it triggers a re-telling of her own story of coming to the capital. HERE WE ARE seeks to portray the present by reflecting on the past, how the legacy of colonization has survived and been normalized nowadays. - ("19th Forum Expanded: Distant Connections", 74th Berlinale).

Orphic Oracular
Experimental fiction | hdv | color | 10:16 | Singapore | 2014
A woman follows a man through a man-made forest. Night falls and she narrates a tale that is at once distant yet familiar. The man she follows undergoes a transformation. Elsewhere we find a wanderer concocting a recipe and deep at night, in an empty amphitheatre a man performs with fire. Orphic Oracular, as it’s title suggests is a vision of a future that recalls the past.
Kent Chan (b. 1984) is an artist, filmmaker and curator based in Singapore and Amsterdam. His practice revolves around our encounters with art, fiction and cinema that explore the links between aesthetic experience and knowledge production. The works and practices of others often form the locus of his works, which examines the ambiguity that lies at the interstices of art (making) and daily life. His works have taken the form of film, text, situations and exhibitions. Trained as a filmmaker, filmmaking forms the basis of his work. Not merely in terms of medium, the cinematic as aesthetic and methodology underpins and informs his practice. Kent uses text and the image medium to construct narratives that investigate the inherent conflicts and issues within the subject matter that he examines. Areas of interest that his works have explored include notions of cultural identities, myths and modernity. His works has been shown internationally in both film festivals and exhibitions in Asia and Europe. He has held his solo exhibition at The Substation in Singapore. Recent group exhibitions include the 4th Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition 2014 and the Busan Biennale 2014.

Al Basateen
Documentary | dcp | color | 24:41 | France | 2025
In 2015, the Basateen al-Razi district of Damascus was razed to the ground as punishment for the population’s uprising against Bashar al-Assad’s regime. This area is set to be replaced by Marota City, a modern and connected district featuring 80 skyscrapers. Ten years later, having lost everything, two former residents reflect on their neighborhood, where their homes and the oldest orchards in Damascus once stood. Through their testimonies and the repurposing of regime-produced 3D animations, memory is awakened and resists this deliberate erasure.
Antoine Chapon (b. 1990, France) is a filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist. His work creates hybrid forms using cinema, CGI animation and archives. His first short film "My Own Landscapes" premiered in Visions du Reel where it won the Best Short Film Award. His work has been showcased at ZKM|Karlsruhe, Centre Pompidou, the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale and the Singapore Art Museum. He is a Berlinale Talents alumnus and he is currently writing his first feature documentary.

Fragments on Machines
Experimental doc. | hdv | color | 17:0 | United Kingdom | 2013
Fragments on Machines reveals the physical framework and materiality of the Internet, a vast network often thought and spoken about solely in abstract terms. Taking New York City as its central focus and interwoven with a fictionalised narrative, the film observes the evolution of architecture in the city to accommodate the material nodes and connectors that comprise the physical manifestation of the “virtual” world. New York is home to many of the great buildings that symbolise nineteenth and early twentieth century industrial capitalism. Today, it is significant that a number of these Art Deco skyscrapers—located predominantly in the Financial District—have become the containers for the infrastructure of the Internet and virtual capital. These grand monuments of brick and steel are now homes to the servers and computers that drive post-industrial finance capitalism. Highly elusive yet pervasive in their nature, data centres consist of room upon room of copper and fibre-optic cables, computer servers and ventilation systems. With direct links to the companies they serve, these Internet hubs become a kind of unofficial space for trade.
Emma Charles is a London based artist. She studied MA Photography at the Royal College of Art (2011-2013) and BA (Hons) in Editorial Photography from the University of Brighton (2006-2009). Working with both photography and moving image, her work explores metropolitan spaces of productivity that are hidden from the public eye, primarily focusing on the more ethereal and abstract elements of industry and corporate environments. Charles was recently commissioned for solo show ‘Surfaces of Exchange’, Jerwood Visual Arts (2014). Recent Group exhibitions and screenings include Kassel Dokfest; Marl Video Art Award; Premio Celeste; ‘Neither Here Nor There’, FotoFocus Biennial; ‘Centralia’, South Kiosk; ‘Aesthetica Short Film Festival’; ‘Night Contact’, Contact Editions and ‘CAPITAL’, George and Jorgen Gallery. Experimental doc. | 16mm | color | 64:14 | United Kingdom | 2020
On A Clear Day You Can See the Revolution From Here excavates layers of myth, geology and technology to reveal the shifting fault lines between a government, its people and their land. The film brings into focus contemporary processes of nation building and myth-making in Kazakhstan through an expansive journey across the remnants of Soviet technological infrastructures that haunt the landscape. Shot on 16mm, the camera is drawn across the Kazakh Steppe taking in locations that include mineral mines, the Eurasian Steppe, the STS decommissioned nuclear site and the newly constructed city of Nur-Sultan.
Emma Charles is a London based artist and filmmaker. Working with experimental approaches to moving image and sound, her research based practice navigates the field of non-fiction while engaging with recurring themes of technology, capitalism and landscape. Playing with the blurred lines between documentary and fiction, her work often reveals the artificiality of both the filmic environment and our lived experience. She has exhibited at Serpentine Galleries and ICA London; HKW, Berlin and Jeu de Paume, Paris. She has also screened her films at Sheffield DocFest, Vision du Réel, Dharamshala International Film Festival, Abandon Normal Devices and Impakt Festival. Errances
Video | hdv | color | 11:54 | France | 2014

Decomposing Landscape
Video | hdv | color | 35:0 | India | 2015
This award winning work creates discursive situations to facilitate in-depth and contemplative observation of the environmental decay of transitive sites in India, using media intervention and interactivity. The project aims to delineate the processes of decay and destruction of pastoral landscapes in the developing economies and societies. Taking point-of-departure from a perspective in the personal experience of forgetting and loss, being a native of the area myself (the artist), this large-scale project intends to reflect upon the interpenetration between locative and global cultures, decay in environmental and climatic integrity, disappearance of indigenous traditions and lapses in collective memory within the landscapes, by production and showcasing of the inter-media installation work. With a media anthropological approach, the project frames the gradual transfiguration with the help of media convergence, staging augmented and site-specific interpenetration between sound, video and still images. The work has been developed through a meticulous collection of audiovisual materials from various Indian locations in extensive fieldworks supported by Prince Claus Fund Amsterdam. This collection has been forming a digital archive expended for realizing the work.
Budhaditya Chattopadhyay is an Indian-born sound/media artist, researcher, writer and theorist, currently based in Europe. Chattopadhyay’s work questions the materiality, site-specificity and object-hood of sound, and addresses the aspects of contingency, contemplation, mindfulness and transcendence inherent in listening. His artistic practice intends to shift the emphasis from “object” to “situation” in the realm of sound. His sound-works are published by Gruenrekorder (Germany) and Touch (UK). Chattopadhyay is a Charles Wallace scholar, Prince Claus grantee and Falling Walls fellow, and has received several residencies and international awards, notably a First Prize in Computer and Electronic Music category of Computer Space festival 2014, Sofia, and an Honorary Mention at PRIX Ars Electronica 2011, Linz.
