Retrospective screenings Klonaris/Thomadaki

The Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin invites you to two exceptional retrospective screenings dedicated to Maria Klonaris and Katerina Thomadaki - filmmakers, visual artists and theoreticians - visionary artists at the crossroads of experimental cinema and performance art.

Greek-born filmmakers, visual artists and theoreticians born in Cairo in 1950 and Athens in 1949 respectively, Maria Klonaris and Katerina Thomadaki have lived in Paris since 1975. Together, they have co-created a multi-disciplinary body of work rooted in theatre and experimental cinema, comprising over a hundred works structured into cycles - La Tétralogie corporelle (1975-1979), Le Cycle de l'Unheimlich (1977-1982), La Série Portraits (1979-1992), Le Cycle des Hermaphrodites (1982-1990), Le Rêve d'Electra (1983-1990), Le Cycle de L'Ange (1985- ), Les Jumeaux (1995-2000) - as well as a large body of publications (manifestos, essays, interviews). Maria Klonaris, who died in Paris in 2014, left a vast output of drawings that had been kept secret, as well as unpublished collections of poems. Katerina Thomadaki was an associate professor at the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne and took part in several research groups in the visual arts and cinema.

The work of both artists has gained international recognition (Musée national d'Art moderne/Centre Pompidou, MoMA (New York), Tate Modern (London), Jeu de Paume (Paris), National Gallery of Art (Washington), Cinémathèque française (Paris), British Film Institute (London), Kunsthalle Wien, Benaki Museum, Onassis Foundation and National Museum of Contemporary Art (Athens), Taipei Museum of Contemporary Art, Joan Miró Foundation (Barcelona), MAXXI (Rome), etc.) and has been the subject of numerous studies. ) and has been the subject of numerous studies. Their films have been restored and preserved by the film heritage department of the Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée, their texts and audiovisual documents by the Bibliothèque nationale de France (Fonds Klonaris/Thomadaki) and their radio creations by the Institut national de l'audiovisuel. In 2024, several of their works entered the collections of the Centre Pompidou and they were awarded the AWARE prize of honour for their joint career.
