Moving Image Art Prize 2024

For the third year, an international jury has awarded the Moving Image Art Prize to one of the works in the programme.

Launched in 2021 in a post-Covid context, to provide even greater support for the unique audiovisual forms that the event promotes, the Moving Image Art Prize is awarded in the form of a grant to an artist taking part in the event.

The Moving Image Art Prize 2024 was announced on Sunday 24 November at 6pm at the Fiminco Foundation.

Jury of the Moving Image Art Prize 2024 :

- Elisabeth Jobin, Curator, Musée d’art contemporain de Genéve - MAMCO Genève
- Jonathan Pouthier, Conservation attaché at the Musée national d'art moderne - Centre Pompidou, in charge of programming the film collection

The Moving Image Art Prize 2024 has been awarded to:
"Ancestral Clouds Ancestral Claims" by Arjuna Neuman and Denise Ferreira da Silva

Jury statement: « We are delighted to announce that the 2024 Moving Image Art Prize is awarded to Ancestral Clouds Ancestral Claims (2023) by Arjuna Neuman and Denise Ferreira da Silva. This poetic and speculative film concludes the artists’ long-term exploration of ‘Elemental Cinema,’ a body of work that challenges dominant ways of thinking shaped by European colonial modernity. Through a unique blend of visual arts, sciences, and philosophy, Neuman and Ferreira da Silva interrogate the entanglements of materiality, history, and geopolitics, exposing systems of inequality embedded in global structures.
Told from the perspective of the wind, the film traverses the Atacama Desert, connecting extractive industries, colonial labor histories, and cutting-edge technoscientific landscapes. Departing from specific sites, it moves seamlessly across times and places, revealing the planetary scale and historical depth of contemporary geopolitical issues. Its fractal composition interfaces between the quantic, organic, historic, and cosmic, experimenting with ways of simultaneously thinking and sensing the multiple layers of material existence.
As the final instalment of their four-part series, this work reaffirms Neuman and Ferreira da Silva’s importance to contemporary art and film. Their collaborative practice opens up new ways of understanding our relationship to the Earth, its histories, and its futures, reminding us that what we cannot see or measure is as vital as what we can. »
