In his digital opera, Thomas Köner invokes le "futurist manifesto" by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti then proceeds to a phase of deconstruction. Call it a return to the future (futurism), for a society meriting the label "post-utopian/post-futurist".

RHEO

Ryoichi KUROKAWA : Rheo| Multimedia concert | 3 HD projection + 5.1ch surround | 0:30:00 | Japan | 2008-2009
Concept, Direction, Composition, Programming: Ryoichi Kurokawa
Production: Cimatics - Co-Production: Maison des Arts de Créteil, Le Manège - Support: Canon Europe

Premiere in Spain

Ryoichi Kurokawa is a young audiovisual artist from Osaka (Japan). He declines vibrant and refined universes through clips, albums, installations, and performances, where glitch minimalism breaks up and re-assembles in more complex and vertiginous structures. Some people think he's a visionary and genial artist while others consider him to be formal and technicist. You're forced to confront with his work: the continuous concentration on synaesthesia, the ability to make imagination fly and the scrupulous attention to landscapes and definition made Kurosawa's works a sort of official standard for the ones who wants to get closer to audio-video world.

Kurokawa was born in 1978 in Osaka. In 1999, he started creating video and sound work and presented audiovisual work, installations and screenings in various art, music and film festivals. At the same time, started performing live with his audiovisual cross-media concerts and released CDs and DVDs. He also performed live-visual for musicians such as HUMAN AUDIO SPONGE (ex.YMO: Sketch Show + Ryuichi Sakamoto). Kurokawa is invited to numerous noted international festivals and museums in Europe, US and Asia including TATE MODERN [UK], ARS ELECTRONICA [AT], MUTEK [CA] and SONAR [ES] for exhibitions, screenings or audiovisual concerts, and he continues to be an active presence on the international stage.

Detailed program and presentation of the participants: from March 30.

Alix DELMAS films four people in the desert. In a western-like landscape, they put together shapes in polystyrene. In the twilight, the installation unveils itself. Christoph MEIER showcases a film set with extras, and recreates the anticipation for action and suspense. Simon MULLAN offers an experience like no other: fireworks in a tunnel. Dora GARCIA films architect Henry van de Welde’s “La Maison Wolfers” in Brussels in subjective camera. Sound and image are dissociated and a man’s voice can be heard commenting on the principle of the subjective camera, especially used in Samuel Beckett’s “Film” (1965). Carles ASENSIO MONRABÀ documents the rise and fall of a small theater in Sant Celoni, a village close to Barcelona. The projectionist works there as usual, although he is aware of its impending final close. Gustavo SPOLIDORO asks about the future of cinema. With that same question in mind, Wim Wenders filmed Antonioni, Fassbinder, Godard and other filmmakers at Cannes in 1982. 26 years later, the same question remains and it is now Wim Wenders’s turn to answer the question. In 1978, Ira SCHNEIDER shared a beach house with Jean-Pierre Gorin in California, who invited Jean-Paul Godard, Wim Wenders, Heiner Müller and Jim McBride. Manuel SAIZ films two actors on a set discussing the similarities and differences between video art and cinema, shooting, budget, and the different approaches to fiction and reality that both practices have. All the while the camera moves in on them.

Oliwia TONTERI and Jerem TONTERI film a solitary character travelling, and by associating images and forms, they deploy the premises of a dream. Johanna DOMKE directs a travelling shot in a park, overlapping public and private spaces. The intrusive camera is like an omniscient eye which would go as far as to build reality in order to create fiction. Theodore TAGHOLM recreates movement from landscape photos. Ken JACOBS digitally revisits a film that he directed between 1964 and 1965, during the war in Vietnam. This film is just as much about time and history as it is about music and human relations. Nicolas LELIÈVRE, Renaud HERBIN and Anamaria FERNANDES directed this series of images, alternating the city of Aubusson with portraits of its inhabitants. Somewhere in between the post card, the slideshow and stereophotograph, these images lay out a sensitive portrait of the city. Crispin GURHOLT films the mise en scene of fixed instants, and leads our gaze to the rebuilding of a possible story. Axel ROESSLER explores a polaroïd photo album. Miska Michael KNAPEK films a café for 22 hours ; decomposes the sequence into spatiotemporal fragments and recomposes a new image, proposing a condensed period of filmed time. Seoungho CHO introduces vertical breaks into the horizontal lines of the golden landscape of Death Valley in California. Mahbubur RAHAMAN films the urban spaces and children in a city in Bangladesh. Thomas KÖNER proposes an oniric form of transportation and stretches us across a ghost-town.

REPRESSION

Liu WEI: Weile Wangque de Jinian | Documentary | dv | color | 0:12:50 | China | 2009 [•]
Apichatpong WEERASETHAKUL: A Letter to Uncle Boonmee | Experimental fiction | | color | 0:17:40 | Thailand | 2009 [•]
Eija-Liisa AHTILA: Missä on missä? | Experimental film | 35mm | color and b&w | 0:55:50 | Finland | 2009 [•]

© Eija-Liisa Ahtila

LIU WEI films the silence of passers-by 20 years after the protests at Tiananmen Square in China. While the memory of the deaths is becoming blurred, the impossible remembrance is being replaced by illusion. Apichatpong WEERASETHAKUL slowly films the interior spaces of houses in a village. They are all deserted, apart from one, wherein we see a group of young soldiers digging a hole in the ground. Three men recite a letter addressed to Uncle Boonmee, which tells the story of a small community where all the houses have been abandoned. Eija-Liisa AHTILA recounts an incident which took place during the Algerian war. Reacting to the atrocities committed, two young Algerian boys murder their friend, a French boy of the same age. The film starts in the present day as Death enters the house of the Poet. She starts to investigate these past events, which gradually become interwoven with the present moment.

Ariane MICHEL films a man working in a dark glacial cave, by the light of a single lamp. He is patiently defrosting a gigantic block of earth to find the corpse of a mammoth, intact, emerge from the inside. Peter ROSE explores space with the help of beams of light, creating primitive and mysterious images. Alexandra REYNOLDS recounts a man’s experience of an eye operation, which was used in a research project about visual tracks and meaning. Sabine SCHÖBEL films the Palace of the Republic, emblematic building of the ex-GDR in Berlin. Restored only to be destroyed, its metal skeleton, before being demolished, evokes other ruins, those of Berlin after the bombings and of the World Trade Center. Franziska CORDES et Markus BERTUCH film the abduction and transportation of an equestrian statue, starting at its vertical posture and ending with its horizontal set down. North of the Navarra region, in the forest of Irati, Carlos IRIJALBA, moves about amongst the nature around him, a tower’s light as his stadium, creating a hyper-defined space by and for performance. The tower sheds light, literally and figuratively, on its function as a pre-narrative device. Ben RIVERS films a man isolated in nature seemingly escaping the cycle of time. Eléonore DE MONTESQUIOU films the frozen white vastness of a river in Estonia as a scene in waiting or between-period of an individual or collective history. Sasha fishes in winter. He speaks Russian, but not a word of Estonian. He desires to live neither in Russia nor in Estonia, but in this in-between space which is the Narva-Ivangorod.
