Avi MOGRABI follows journalists in his car. Under the unyielding glares and threats from tanks and missles, they try to find their way. Lia LAPITHI SHUKUROGLOU questions the Greek-Chypriot double identity vis-a-vis its ethnic and religious origins. Jonathan CUMMINS documents the conversations he had with an Irish political prisoner and questions the impact incarceration has on extreme ideological convictions. For this piece, Aurelia MIHAI drew inspiration from the figure of countess Elisabeth Báthory, the character Dracula’s female adornment, who bathed in the blood of young women to preserve her youth. She draws a parallel between the countess and the female patients of a psychiatric ward in Romania, in 1969, under the regime of Ceausescu. Lina SELANDER uses Godard’s la Chinoise as a launching pad to examine the relationship between political, emotional and utopist verbal expression. She explores the revolutionary ideals of that time and the desire to start anew. Ramon MATEOS show which ideological tools are used in affirming an hypothetical national identity. In ‘Les oiseaux d’Arabie”, David YON speaks to us about Antonio Atarès, one of thousands of Spanish refugies who crossed the Pyrénées to escape Franco’s regime. Upon arriving in France, he is sent to Camp Vernet in Ariège. Then in March 1941, he received a letter from an unknown person, the philosopher Simone Weil. Their paths are destined to cross in the half-light of history. On one side we have a politically engaged Jewish philosopher fighting a mystical battle in Marseille and on the other side, we have an anarchist countryman exiled to Vernet then to the edge of the Sahara, in Djelfa in Algeria.

Phillip WARNELL films the philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy after his transplant experience, meditating on the history and integrity of his body and on the foreigner travelling from one river bank to the other, strange body stranger. Vianney LAMBERT retraces the anonymous narrative of an exiled young man. Bouchra KHALILI confronts the real life experience of immigration with the flatness of geographic maps and uncovers another map of Africa – made of the misunderstanding that burdens this continent which “have not been sufficiently represented in history”. Gil & Moti act on the border between public and private, in the spheres of art and society, dealing with themes of integration and exclusion. Galina MYZNIKOVA et Sergey PROVOROV film a handful of men in a snow-covered landscape who test their physical force against nature’s. United side by side, they extract themselves from this hostile environment through a sort of hesitant ballet, a strange choreography. The film intitled “Despair “ (Otchajanie), describes the mechanisms of a world governed by crows.

Alix DELMAS films four people in the desert. In a western-like landscape, they put together shapes in polystyrene. In the twilight, the installation unveils itself. Christoph MEIER showcases a film set with extras, and recreates the anticipation for action and suspense. Simon MULLAN offers an experience like no other: fireworks in a tunnel. Dora GARCIA films architect Henry van de Welde’s “La Maison Wolfers” in Brussels in subjective camera. Sound and image are dissociated and a man’s voice can be heard commenting on the principle of the subjective camera, especially used in Samuel Beckett’s “Film” (1965). Carles ASENSIO MONRABÀ documents the rise and fall of a small theater in Sant Celoni, a village close to Barcelona. The projectionist works there as usual, although he is aware of its impending final close. Gustavo SPOLIDORO asks about the future of cinema. With that same question in mind, Wim Wenders filmed Antonioni, Fassbinder, Godard and other filmmakers at Cannes in 1982. 26 years later, the same question remains and it is now Wim Wenders’s turn to answer the question. In 1978, Ira SCHNEIDER shared a beach house with Jean-Pierre Gorin in California, who invited Jean-Paul Godard, Wim Wenders, Heiner Müller and Jim McBride. Manuel SAIZ films two actors on a set discussing the similarities and differences between video art and cinema, shooting, budget, and the different approaches to fiction and reality that both practices have. All the while the camera moves in on them.

Fani ZGURO manipules a film noir shot in Albania in the ’70 and transforms it into its own film trailer, using a song by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds as the soundtrack. Maia PEDRO uses the film « A Zona » by Sandro Aguilar as a spring board, and exposes the defaults inherent to film. These images drive us to a state of indetermination, in which the narrative and temporal logics are forgotten. Vivian OSTROVSKY directs a cinephile farce, by showing fragments of more than 25 films, from the 20’s to the 90’s, with cowboys, indians, and damsels in distress. Quotes by Wittgenstein, Gilles Deleuze and Slavoj Zizek punctuate the ensemble. Bob PARIS reworks « Shadow of a Doubt » by Alfred Hitchcock. Volker SCHREINER uses signs of emptiness as a motive. Eli CORTIÑAS HIDALGO stretches an end scene into infinity. Karel DE COCK proposes a meditation on female representation in western films, by reworking a scene from “The Searchers” de John Ford. On a split-screen Jean-Jacques PALIX combines rushes of feature films representing record players or DJs. A film mixing a film, the soundtrack consists of sound clips from the original rushes. Antoni PINENT directs a cinematographic piece which questions the definition of the frame as a minimal unit of cinematographic time, and breaks it up into four fragments. He revisits extracts from avant-guard and experimental Hollywood films. A balance of images is conserved, while still offering an analysis of the history of cinema. Cinema in a state of reinvention, destruction and explosion.

Mario PFEIFER films two adolescents from the Kreuzberg district in Berlin. They venture across different social spaces and appropriate them through an aesthetic gesture. Lupi de Alberto DE MICHELE films a group of thieves operating only on the foggiest of nights, when everything becomes invisible. Jeanne LIOTTA creates an animated portrait of a television tower at the top of a hill, the guard over the fog and electronic signals. Hee Won Navi LEE brings two voices together over the telephone to talk about ghosts and guide us across the city. Chia-Wei HSU films the Coliseum of Hong Kong, devoid of any sign of life, apart from a single voice. Nooshin FARHID reappropriates the images connected to representations created by the media, images of a degraded society. Tonci GACINA films the houses along the train line connecting Split to Zagreb by night, the light from the houses shining through the windows; brief moments of life.
