This session reunites two digital animations. Michael Van Den Abeele works on the idea of collective regression and social cohesion. Yves Netzhammer develops internal landscapes of the mind, a timeless multiplicity related to art and philosophy. The artist has an interest in human thought processes and the interplay between external images in the world and internal images in the mind. Undertaken as an open-ended investigation, his art is concerned with transience and states of change.

These two films take us 25 and 40 years back in time. Cultural differences and similarities with our present time emerge from this distance in time. Fernando del Cubo displays images from the audience at Lou Reed’s very first concert in Madrid in 1890. Those images are far from the clichés surrounding the movida movement and the violent use of culture by youth. Ira Schneider’s film begins in New York in 1968; where a group of young people repaint the front of a shop in Greenwich Village. At the same time, it is war in Vietnam. The film elaborates a cultural genealogy from 1968 to 2004, mixing archive images from a liberating youth and images taken from current events.

The body, as a place for change or translation, expressed both intimately and in different spaces. Antonin de Bemels tests solo survival techniques, using his animated alter ego. Isabelle Levenez features a young woman by the sea, practicing an unusual private ritual. Almagul Menlibayeva films a shamanic rite in a post-soviet industrial landscape. Mumtoz Kamolzoda films an ancient ceremony in Tajikistan: If a woman loses her fiancé before the wedding, she will first have to marry a tree before she can ever marry another man, in order to be released from a bad aura. Eléonore de Montesquiou films the behaviour of a young crowd on the beaches of the Paljassaare peninsula, a former military base. Henrike Meyer and Thérèse Nilsen feel space with the body, in an abandoned camp due to relocation for cheap workforce. Guzman De Yarza presents a fight, which becomes a group struggle. Maya Schweizer uses images of Israeli women liberated by dancing. Lutz Gregor choreographs a Raft of the Medusa, where bodies fight and become moving figures. Reynold Reynolds explores the thoughts of a woman trapped in an apartment, where time becomes circular and repetitive. Jason Workman performs risky acrobatics in a staircase.

Art or life. A burglary has occurred unnoticed; the crime needs to be investigated. Marco Raparelli tells the adventures of a stray dog, wandering throughout the city. Frederico Solmi revives an untammed King Kong in a post-hyper-capitalistic society. Peter Garfield films a forest, where it is preferable not to wander. Marko Maëtamm takes his wife and kids for a drive, until pressure becomes unbearable. Patrick Bernatchez features Ronald Mac Donalds in a new role, his last one, in an underground garage. Crispin Gurholt gels his characters in order to better investigate a crime committed in the museum. Carles Congost presents how painting takes its revenge on contemporary art. Velázquez and the Masters of the Golden Age hatch a plot to bring back Spanish art in the forefront of the international artistic scene. On a techno soundtrack, Tony Cokes reflects upon the vexed relationship between art criticism and art making during the 1960s and 70s. Daniela Franco’s animated video consists of headlines from Malaysian English newspapers and presents a mumbling karaoke speech on artists. Jacob Gautel offers an exclusive news story, a scoop on the reigning emperor. Martin Sastre offers another scoop, with images as proof, on a princess, who far from being dead is be living in a favela of Montevideo, Uruguay.

An individual language extends beyond the present tense and its recording and extends towards another temporality. Carlos Pazos films an apartment which once was a haven and is now a place with no life. Gaetano Liberti is looking for the threshold where we could look at things which have no place and no time. Barbara Meter films the passage of things, vanishing as wind, shadows and smoke Ian Soroka observes the daily routine what will evolve in nostalgia of an ideal past. Norman Richter films her grandmother’s house. In litany, she says things that belong to an infinite past, covering all temporal dimensions of life.

During this session, change in location and translation from one space to another are symptomatic of a change in state, of an intimate, social or political translation. Hannes Boeck films a young boy in China, who progressively gets out of town. With Elena Näsänen, a young woman exits from a house into the night, walking into the woods, deeper and deeper into the forest, to reach an uncertain light. Julieta Hanono’s video is the crossing of France from South to North, from summer to winter, from night to dawn, a trip almost detached from reality, immersed like in a dream. Mauro Santini brings together a moving landscape and a static object. Deborah Ligorio’s film features a series of aerial views of the Mount Vesuvius and the surrounding landscape of Naples. Thomas Köner multiplies passers-by in a crowd, who become sound and visual figures. Bouchra Khalili crosses Istanbul and records the story of a young Iraqi woman, who has been waiting for 10 years for her visa to join her family in Australia. Elli Rintala’s film features a tanker in open sea, navigating towards an oil refinery on the coast. In this trip, man, technology and nature confront each other. Enrique Ramirez films in sequence a person walking from Santiago de Chile to the Presidential Palace, which witnessed the Coup d’Etat and the return of democracy. A crossing of town, memory and history.

“D’Est is an almost speechless movie, the opposite of “Histoires d’Amérique” and its continuation at the same time. “D’Est” is deeply fictional, because it allows the viewer to tell himself some stories. The frame of the movie is never a documentary one. I am not saying, I am going to tell you everything about Russia. “D’Est” is not a movie about Eastern Europe.
