../_ BERLIN 2008

From the 1st to the 6th of July

[EDITO]

We are very pleased to present, from the 1st to the 6th of July 2008 in the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, the 3rd part in the presentation of the 2007-2008 edition of Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin/Madrid, after the first events in Paris in November 2007 at the Pompidou Center, at the Jeu de Paume and at the Palais de Tokyo, and the second portion in Madrid in May 2008 at the Reina Sofía National Museum, at the Filmoteca, at the Instituto Cervantes, at the Ministerio de Cultura and at the Complejo El Aguila de la Comunidad de Madrid.

Since 1997, Rencontres Internationales has undertaken interdisciplinary work between new cinema and contemporary art-in film, video, and multimedia formats.
The boundaries between these artistic practices are permeable, and Rencontres Internationales seeks to privilege trajectories and circulations between these practices, their authors, and their respective publics, as well as between the different geographical, artistic, and cultural spaces where the events take place.

Initially in Paris and Berlin exclusively, Rencontres Internationalies opened up in 2007 to a third city of presentation, Madrid. This opening made it possible to create a space for unique artistic and intercultural exchanges among the three cities.

This new edition of Rencontres Internationales will take place in the presence of artists and filmmakers from all over the world, and it will present 200 works from Germany, France, Spain, and 60 other countries, created both by artists recognized on the international scene and by young artists who will be introduced for the first time in Berlin.
Each day, the public will be able to discover, for free, indoor programming and a video projection sequence, as well as being able to participate in numerous debates and meetings: discussions with artists, critiques, and curators and other professionals from the art and cinema environments. Many high points make this edition special, most notably the opening evening on July 1, two special cartes blanches for Antonio Muntadas and Pedro Costa on July 4 & 5, as well as, over numerous days, a Franco-German forum centered upon young artists and the relationships between cinema and contemporary art.

Presenting the same programming in cities as different as Berlin, Paris, and Madrid, with their particular relationships to their culture and with their general cultural practices, makes it possible to bring to the fore what are probably the most dense and complex issues of creation in our times, and to interrogate our ability to receive that which is other to us: that is, different artistic contexts, or different cultural references.

Thus, in order to go further with this idea, we would like, for this new Berlin edition, to highlight in particular the Franco-German dimension of the project and its dimension of cultural exchanges between Paris and Berlin.

Rencontres Internationales would like to take account of the specificities and the convergences in the new artistic practices of new cinema and contemporary art, to explore emergent artistic forms and their critical propositions, and to bring about this necessary time when points of view cross each other and exchange with each other.

Rencontres Internationales would also like to contribute to reflection on the contemporary culture of the image, through well-made programming that is open to everyone.
