Placanica is a popular place for devotion and miracles. The apparition of the Virgin to Brother Cosimo is celebrated every year and attracts thousands of pilgrims from the Calabria to the Virgin of the Rock, thus making Placanica one of the most important religious places in the area. This film is about the journey and the prayer of a pilgrims group followed by Ginetta Chiarello who gives us information about the spiritual story of this place and also its religious rituals. Script - La Vergine dello Scoglio - Pilgrimage in Placanica (Reggio Calabria), May the 10th, 1993 In Placanica, place of traditional devotion and miracles, every May the 10th the apparition of the Virgin Mary to Brother Cosimo is celebrated. Every year thousands of people, especially from Calabria, gather in pilgrimage to the "Virgin of the Rock", recognizing Placanica as one of the most important places of devotion in the region. The journey with the congregation Ginetta: "We live nearby and we don't appreciate the beauty of our region Calabria but do you know why? Because nobody stimulates us, nobody pushes us, we are taken by other interests" this video tells the story of a one-day trip of a congregation, headed by Ginetta Chiarello, a precious guide to the local spiritual history and to traditional devotion practice. Ginetta: "First stop Corazzo, there, without messing up the bus we get down and first we go to church, we'll recite our morning prayers like good Christians should then we'll visit the Chapel which is very beautiful and after that we'll have breakfast and then leave for "the Rock"". "The calling.... more than a vocation, a calling.... came when I was in Lourdes, There when I saw all those pilgrims praying with such intensity and fervour, I said... I realised that The Virgin Mary wanted me to bring to pilgrimage my parishioners" Song: with more fervour should I pray you but this heart can only love you in this life's stormy sea You bring the ship to the harbour let me land, eventually, in heaven Vincenza (A Young Girl): "It is time for me to go to the Rock, therefore the devil, who does exist, either tries his best not to let me go, or scares me, he wants to stop my spiritual journey so....all this has been appening to me for the past three days, two days ago he came to suffocate me, I couldn't speak, I couldn't ask for help, no one could help me, only my faith could, and so I prayed and I felt free again." Ginetta: "Have you all listened to the evidence? and you'll soon see that now that we go to the Rock, you will feel in a different world especially people who are coming for the first time" Give us this day, our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. "The Rock should be a little Lourdes for everyone I mean, little Lourdes because The Virgin appeared there too and She said that the Rock was to be a little Lourdes." the arrival to the Rock A Woman: Look, he's filming us Ginetta: "On September the 30th 1987, I went to the Rock to have my first conversation...no not at that time...the first conversation was when I decided to go because things had started to go badly. in my life I'd never had problems with colleagues, however a colleague of mine, I dont't know for which reason, started to sow discord, probably because of jealousy, I don't know And I knew about this place because there was a chance to speak with this Friar, who is not actually a friar..., he belongs to the Third Order, they cannot celebrate mass because their calling came late." "He looks very humble and his eyes....it is said "eyes are the mirror of the soul" and to me this is true, because eyes mirror everything we keep inside moreover....it's spiritual, not physical, it is not because he's got beautiful eyes or because they are blue or green....no! it is beacause, even while looking at lots of people, he gets into your soul. I mean, these are spiritual gifts. it seems that when you are next to him, or even if you are in a distance....he's looking at you, pointing at you, calling you... and you say "why is he watching me?" And She keeps wanting to accomplish this, to bring us to Jesus" Ginetta: "I realised I was a sinner and frail and so while I was in confession I started to cry violently. I had this kind of violent cry the first time I went to the Rock, while people where invoking Jesus's blood. I started crying and I could'nt stop. Now I react by praising the Lord, and when somebody shouting is next to me, what I do is...I pray...I mean...you can see people collapsing and they can't calm down...the first pray that comes to me is "Jesus I love you, Jesus I love you" and I quit only when the person calms down." "Everytime I go to the Rock I have these.... I come back recharged, spiritually speaking, and always with this willing to help people and to make my life better because I'm in a journey to perfection I can't say I'm perfect" Song and Brother Cosimo Voice: "Satan is defeated, Satan is defeated in the name of Jesus" Crowd: Let's praise Brother Cosimo Priest: "Hurrah for the Virgin Mary!"
