Communiqué
Blanche Neige invades the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art.
Blanche Neige project evolves through series of interventions. In its
original form, it was a show on scene created in April 2003 at Studio
14 Paradis that constitutes the project matrix, which is punctually loaded
with White Snow (Blanche Neige) apparitions. Under various forms such
as performances, conferences, shows and manifestations, those White Snow
take advantage on mass culture and multiply themselves as it. White Snow,
a character who comes from somewhere far away, spreads as a virus, invade
the place, take it for herself and leaves it as quickly. Making White
Snow a nomad, she becomes the telltale of this place and people who use
it. In this project, Catherine Bay considers first of all our relation
to the image. White Snow as an hostage of her own effigy commercialized
by Walt Disney, embodies by her presence, an alienating process and her
original situation setting calls our memories.
From a dozen of years, Catherine Bay develops a choreography project,
staging project and manages events in various locations types. Out of
that Blanche Neige project, she created numerous artistic performances:
Nains Mode d'Emploi ("Dwarfs, Using Notice", presented also
at the Bellone-Brigittines festival in 2002 and at Nouvelles Scènes
de Dijon in 2000), which is a performance for six bodybuilders and seven
gum chewers created for Food-lab in the Soirée Nomades, and also
Elucubrations III, a solo performance for women and dumbbells, that she
played at the Théâtre des Amandiers in Nanterre (next by
Paris) in 1997.
