Welcome to Berlin 2021!

We look forward to seeing you at the opening night on Wednesday 25 August, from 7.30 pm to midnight, on site at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt and live online.

It is a special opening night that we are preparing, similar to an oscillation between the real and the surreal, the experience of physical and digital spaces that intersect and converge.
Multiple, open, free and paradoxical, this opening night celebrates the first day of an intense week made of projections, performances, discussions and beautiful projects..

Strange matter doesn’t occur on Earth in a stable form. The strange quark it contains causes a state of constant dissolution and transformation, a threat to our material world. The volatility of matter, its “strangeness,” is the essence of Luxusberlin’s performance. Michael Busch and Claudia Splitt create a live film using live music, digital and analog projections, words and songs. Images are superimposed, complemented by sound collages and a narrative in which contaminated water and torrential rains threaten both the underworld and the earth’s surface.
Hel on Earth refers to the Blanke Helle, a small park in Berlin’s Tempelhof district. According to legend, it is the entrance to the subterranean realm of Hel, the Germanic goddess of the underworld and fertility. Starting from this special place, Luxusberlin unfolds a Berlin painting in time à la Walter Benjamin.

Luxusberlin is a performance group that has been active in Berlin with changing lineups since the mid-1990s. It currently consists of founding member Michael Busch and performer and singer Claudia Splitt (andcompany&Co, Madonna Hip Hop Massaker).

"La photo a été prise à l'aide d'une planche peinte, dans le parc Kuling à Lushan..." Une femme se rappelle l'histoire qui se cache derrière une photographie: c'était une journée d'été radieuse dans les années 80. Sa famille s’était rendue à Lushan pour échapper à la chaleur. Au fil de ses souvenirs, nous découvrons peu à peu l'histoire oubliée et cette photographie altérée par des taches d’eau.

Lei Lei est artiste et réalisateur. Il est né à Nanchang, dans la province du Jiangxi, en 1985. Artiste d'animation expérimental, il touche également à la vidéo, à la peinture, à l'installation, à la musique et à la performance VJ. En 2009, il a obtenu un Master en animation de l'Université Tsinghua, Pékin (Chine). En 2010, son film "This is LOVE" a été présenté au Ottawa International Animation Festival, Ottawa (Canada), où il a reçu le prix Best Narrative Short Award. En 2013, son film "Recycled" a remporté le Grand Prix du film court non narratif au Holland International Animation Film Festival, Utrecht (Pays-Bas). En 2014, il a fait partie du jury du Animafest Zagreb (Croatie) et du Holland International Animation Film Festival, Utrecht (Pays-Bas). Il a également remporté la bourse 2014 du Asian Cultural Council. En 2017, il a travaillé dans le programme CalArts Experimental Animation, Los Angeles (USA), en tant que membre du corps enseignant. En 2018, il a été invité à joindre la branche des courts et longs métrages d'animation de l'Académie des Oscars. En 2019, son premier long métrage, "Breathless Animals" a été sélectionné dans la section Forum de la Berlinale, Berlin (Allemagne).

East of Skopje there is a small quiet square where you can sometimes hear the trace of orchestral music. If you follow these sounds, they lead you into a large studio. The "Film & Music Ensemble" (FAME's project) in Skopje specialises in music for film. The hundred or so musicians, sound engineers, etc., who're part of it come every day to record scores from all over the world. The composers usually attend the sessions by teleconference. On the same day, you can move from a French TV drama to a Bollywood production. Following a smooth-running mechanism, the orchestra continuously produces music to support images and to give them their emotional tones. On the small square next to this large studio, life follows its course in a quiet indifference.


Coming from visual arts and developing a practice on the edge of music, radio and cinema, Simon Ripoll-Hurier (born 1985) tracks down situations of listening. Between 2014 and 2017, he developed Diana, a research project that includes film, video, performance and radio. He is now working on a film connecting today’s Silicon Valley with old CIA parapsychological experiments. His work has been presented in festivals, biennials, museums, galleries, and broadcasted on the radio. He also plays with Les Agamemnonz, an instrumental surf band, and co-founded *DUUU, an artist-run webradio.

Un film est projeté dans une chambre où dort une femme. Le personnage du film parle de l'avenir de l'humanité et ses paroles pénètrent dans la tête de la femme, envahissant son subconscient.

Eneos Çarka (1996, Albanie) a commencé sa formation cinématographique à l'Université des Arts d'Albanie en réalisation. Il a reçu la bourse du Government Fund of Excellence pour faire un Master en études cinématographiques au University College London (Royaume-Uni), où il a obtenu son diplôme avec distinction. Il fait actuellement partie de la 8e génération de DocNomads, un master conjoint Erasmus Mundus en Documentaire de création. Ses courts documentaires se concentrent sur les études de personnages et traitent souvent des thèmes de l'identité, de la migration et des relations familiales. Il porte une attention particulière aux problématiques des représentations, expérimentant différentes approches du cinéma documentaire. Son premier long métrage documentaire est actuellement en post-production.

By John Menick 2020; 32 min; two-channel 2K HD video; color and black and white; in English, Japanese, and Italian. Made during the New York lockdown, “Haunting” is a two-channel film assembling footage from several decades of supernatural domestic horror films. These are films in which domestic and residential spaces—suburban houses, decaying mansions, off-season hotels—are haunted by the spectral or the paranormal. Drawing on horror’s highly organized genre conventions, “Haunting” creates an imaginary architecture in which the repressed always returns and the past is never dead. The film’s protagonists—often played by actors now forgotten—appear not unlike ghosts themselves, their wanderings twinned across the film’s two screens in a strange, apparitional choreography. “Haunting” is a study in the spectral, as it is a response to the ghostly world that emerged from the pandemic—a world that became, for many, both uncanny and terrifying.


John Menick’s visual art and writings investigate how the fictive troubles the real. Working with cinematic history, hearsay, pseudoscience, and genre, Menick has created a diverse artistic practice that operates between fiction and critique. His earliest film, The Disappearance (2002), took the form of a fictional location scouting in Nuremberg, Germany, in order to tell the postwar history of the city. Menick’s Starring Sigmund Freud (2012) was a video memento for Sigmund Freud’s life as a fictional character in film. His most recent project, Haunting (2020), is an evocation of the long history of ghosts in cinematic horror, and how film itself can be understood as a spectral medium. Born in White Plains, New York, Menick studied fine art at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. After graduation, he was an early member of several seminal New York art collectives including Nomads + Residents and 16 Beaver Group. His visual art and films have been exhibited and screened at dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel; the International Film Festival, Rotterdam; MoMA PS1, New York; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; CCA Wattis, San Francisco; and Artists Space, New York. Menick’s essays and stories have appeared in Frieze, The Believer, Mousse Magazine, BOMB, Spike Art Quarterly, Art in America, and Witte de With Review, among other publications. His first book of collected prose, A Report on the City, was published in 2012 by Walther König and was listed by Frieze magazine as one of the highlights of the year. Menick received grants from the Jerome Foundation and the New York Foundation for the Arts, and has received several commissions, including from Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers in France. Menick currently lives in New York City where he is also a visiting professor of film at the Cooper Union.

Lei Lei refilms amateur photos found in a flea market, postcards, propaganda images from the time of Mao, screenshots of the film "Romance on Lushan Mountain," the first love film made after the Cultural Revolution, questioning the veracity of a family memory and collective memory. In Skopje, Simon Ripoll-Hurier films the recording studio "Film & Music Ensemble", specialising in film music. More than a hundred musicians and professionals work there, interpreting and recording scores from all over the world, ranging from French television fiction to a video game and a Bollywood production. Eneos Carka observes a sleeping woman in a room where the character in a projected film talks about the future of humanity. John Menick reassembles excerpts from horror films, in which domestic spaces are haunted, and deploys an imaginary architecture in which the repressed always return and the past is never dead. The protagonists themselves seem to be ghostly presences, wandering between two screens. This wandering echoes the world that has emerged from the pandemic - a world that is both strange and terrifying for many.

The requerimiento was a declaration by the Spanish monarchy of Castile's divine right to take possession of the New World's territories and to subjugate, exploit and, if necessary, fight the native inhabitants. This experimental 16mm short film explores the aesthetics of a mythological time and its archetypical creatures and materialities. In particular, following the trajectories of a serpent and a meteorite's fragment, REQUERIMIENTO develops an interwoven narration questioning human and nonhuman alterities in different epochs and cultures.


Andrea Bordoli holds a BA in Anthropology and Philosophy from the Université de Neuchâtel (2015), and a MA in Visual Anthropology from the University of Manchester (2017). He is currently based in Geneva, where he studies cinema at the Haute Ecole d'Art et Design (HEAD) while developing his own personal research at the intersection between anthropological theory, documentary cinema and visual art.

Love Needs Time to Kill

The impetus to think like this project has been pulled to start from the end, is a symptom of the crisis of historical experience. As the seminaries in the Basque Country began to close, their pedagogical methods have been reduced to the imagination of several generations. "LOVE NEEDS TIME TO KILL" is about the emptiness distilled by the loss of what’s natural and cultural. Over recent decades Franciscan seminaries, along with those of other Orders, have been closing down across the Basque Country. With their closing, comes the loss of a pedagogy that has been a fundamental pillar in the education and identity of the Basque Country. Part of the pedagogical approach was to have large collections of plant and animal specimens, collected from missions in the American, African, and Asian colonies. This research project connects the identity of the diaspora in the missions and their forgotten pedagogical approach to the construction of an exotic and colonial imaginary. On the stage of a small theater in one of the closed seminaries, we have recreated a Baroque still-life scene from the 17th century. The still-life becomes a form of barricade, a gesture of struggle and resistance, in which the inert yet expressive bodies of the animals assert a sense of destiny and uncertainty that has accompanied us from the Romantic era through to present day.


Txuspo Poyo ( Alsasua, Navarra) holds a BA in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU). In 2001 he completed an ISCP residency sponsored by Foundation Marcelino Botín and also studied at the CADA center of New York University. In 2006 he received funding from the Vegap Foundation and The Valencia Art Foundation for his Delay Glass project, and the same year won the Prize Gure Artea of the Basque Government. In 2008, he was awarded first prize at the 10th Unión Fenosa International Exhibition. In 2015 he received the Multiverso grand funding from The BBVA Foundation for La Engaña tunnel project and 2018 from Huarte contemporary Art Center and the Navarra Government for Izaro project. In 2019 he received funding from the Vegap Foundation. He has taken part in the Madrid Region’s 15th Image Symposium, and has been an invited speaker on master’s programs at the University of Cuenca and the University Of Basque Country UPV-EHU. He has held solo exhibitions in venues such as BBVA Foundation, Madrid, Artium Museum in Vitoria, Centre d’Art La Panera in Lleida, the Costa Rica Museum of Contemporary Art and Design and the Montcada Gallery of La Caixa foundation in Barcelona. His group exhibitions include Geopolíticas de la animación showing at the CAAC in Seville and MARCO in Vigo; Les Rencontres Internationales Paris/Madrid/Berlin; the 2nd Angola Triennial; the FILE in São Paulo; Incógnitas at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao; Cine y casi cine at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid; Multitude at the Artist Space Gallery in New York, and Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation, in Guarene-Torino, Italy.

Emanuele Dainotti (b. 1987 in Milano, Italy. Lives and works in Antwerpen, Belgium) is an artist and filmmaker. Recent exhibitions include: Museum of the Moving Image (USA); Louvre Museum (France); Reykjavík International Film Festival (Iceland); Rencontres Internationales Paris (France); Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (Brazil); CGAI (Spain); Hudson Valley MOCA (USA); Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea (Portugal); Festival Miden (Greece); FIVAC (Cuba). In 2018 he won the “International Competition for the Intermedia Artwork” organized by the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, The Faculty of Intermedia and the Foundation for Development of Intermedia Artwork. In 2019 a jury presided by Anish Kapoor and Anda Rottenberg awarded him with the “Now You See Me award” at Louvre Museum in Paris. In 2020 he is among the artists of Loops Expanded, an international network, dedicated to exhibiting and researching the concept and the form of the Loop.

How to reestablish the future of our relationship with other species? A journey in the forest near Taipei with an uncertain destination. A nomadic speculation on relationships and processes that occur among species and dimensions beyond the human.


Mauricio Freyre (Lima, 1976) researcher, audiovisual artist and filmmaker with a background on architecture. His projects revolve around structures and systems of ideas in the margins of the constructed and the projected, focusing the attention on blind spots, dark areas, accidents, distortions and forms of consciousness that are excluded. Currently he is working on the audiovisual project ‘Estados Generales’, focused on the role of botanics and its agency within the colonial sciences, exploring the political and subversive dimension of the plant world in relation to a western epistemology. He has obtained the National Prize for Experimental Films awarded by the Ministry of Culture in Peru and the Matadero Production Grant in Madrid. His films and installations have been part of different programs and exhibitions including Festival Internacional de Cine Valdivia, Strangloscope, Les Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin, l’Alternativa, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, TENT Rotterdam, Nederlands Film Festival and Fundación Telefonica Lima.

Kaliurang, à Yogyakarta, est situé près du volcan actif Merapi, un lieu où les fantômes des souvenirs et de l'histoire font partie du paysage. Il s’agit d’une vidéo subtile, créée spécialement pour 900mdpl en 2019, dans laquelle les habitants de la ville deviennent acteurs, dans le rôle de fantômes. De temps en temps, les habitants de Kaliurang voient un Hollandais à pied, ou un soldat japonais qui marche, ou une Javanaise portant une jarre d'eau, ou un animal sauvage ou un être surnaturel... passer comme s'ils étaient là, vivant parmi nous. Ils se cachent dans les arbres - comme si les arbres, la forêt et la montagne étaient les témoins nus de toute l'histoire du colonialisme, de la guerre et du processus néolibéral du développement. Une œuvre de fiction sans flux narratif. Les fantômes marchent-ils parmi nous ou sommes-nous les fantômes ?

Mark Salvatus (né en 1980) vit et travaille à Manille, aux Philippines. Il a étudié les arts publicitaires à l'université de Santo Tomas, à Manille. La vie sur l'île suit le rythme changeant du jour et de la nuit. Là où l'unique route s'enfonce dans la forêt, l'air devient plus chaud, plus humide. Ici, à l'ombre des grands arbres, un homme travaille avec son outil. Les sons qu'il produit se mêlent à ceux de la nature qui englobe tout. Son quotidien est rythmé par l'ombre et la lumière jusqu'au coucher du soleil. La nuit, à l'autre bout du chemin, sa solitude est adoucie par les voix des autres, près du feu qui réchauffe, jusqu'aux premières lueurs du jour.

Isabell Heimerdinger est née à Stuttgart, en Allemagne. Elle a étudié la sculpture à la Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (Allemagne) et a obtenu un Master en photographie au California Institute of Arts de Los Angeles (USA). Pendant ses années à Hollywood, elle a gagné sa vie en travaillant dans l'animation d’effets spéciaux. Sans surprise, son travail artistique tourne autour des conditions de réalisation des films. En 2008, elle a tourné en France son premier film court narratif, "Detour", puis une série de films expérimentaux à Pékin ("Good Friends", "Blind Date", "Mr. Xu") et en Italie ("Giorgio"). Si les décors de ses films sont toujours réels, les histoires et les personnages qui les habitent ne le sont pas. Elle vit et travaille à Berlin. Andrea Bordoli develops an interwoven narrative and refers to the "requerimiento," a declaration by the Spanish monarchy on the divine right of Castile to take possession of New World territories and to subjugate, exploit and fight the inhabitants. Txuspo Poyo creates a 17th century Baroque still life with inert but expressive bodies of stuffed animals collected during Jesuit missions to the colonies. Emanuele Dainotti filmed animals on a farm in Belgian Limburg and wondered about the risks of viral contagion. The image continuously changes dimension as the film progresses, until it becomes impossible to watch. In a forest near Taipei, Mauricio Freyre observes, in a continuous shift, the fluctuation of all forms, in a trajectory that alternates between documentary and science fiction. Mark Salvatus films a valley in Indonesia where the ghosts of memory and history are part of the landscape. The inhabitants become both actors and ghosts, and witnesses of history. Isabell Heimerdinger observes a man working on a plantation in São Tomé and Príncipe. Life on the island is in tune with the changing rhythm of day and night. The noises that the man makes with his machete mingle with the sounds of nature surrounding him.
