The project Snowhite is an extensive work that occurs over time
and plays on the character's proliferation of appearances and on
the multiplicity of proposed unique interventions. Confronting the
icon of Snowhite to the plurality of the cultures, the performance
reactivates the imaginary of a tale made prisoner by the image established
by Walt Disney.
Coming from the popular tale, this character belongs at the same
time to the identity of reproductibleness and merchandising peculiar
to the mass culture and to the variation linked to the oral and
literary tradition of the popular tale. Stability versus movement.
Performance accentuates this tension between two looks: on one side
the dominant model and to the other side the singularity of our
cultures, which echo each other.
Mirror of our contemporary society, Snowhite also penetrates our
individual memory in an intimate relationship and lead us to question
the becoming of our singularities face to globalization.
Originally a stage show (created in April 2003, at the 14 Paradis
Studio in Paris), it constitutes the matrix of a project regularly
fueled by new appearances of Snowhite. Thus, in accordance with
the original show, the new performances proposed by Catherine Bay
in each venue are developed as a result of a workshop that engages
different audiences (comedians, dancers, art school students...).
The Snowhite project develops in spaces marked by a specific architecture
and history (Cartier Foundation in Paris, holiday resort in ex URSS,
Moscow, nuclear shelter in Switzerland, freight zone.) The architecture
of the space and its philosophical and political preoccupations
get directly into resonance with the project.

Conceptually the workshop will focus on the tension between "objective
mapping" and subjective mapping" and how locative media
relate to both. At this moment in time many possibilities of GPS
data collection and visualization are available mapping becomes
more and more personalized. Does mapping thus become a story telling
tool for everybody? Now that we can easily combine GPS with other
personal data such as photo, video or audio what does this bring?
Will proposed geosophy of John K. Wright in his lucid 1946 article
"Terrae Incognitae: The Place of Imagination in Geography"
become true and available for everybody? If google maps becomes
the standard of personalized mapping, how subjective it still can
be? or do we need to design more flexible, software tools?
* "GeoTales" is the given name by iMAL for the locative
media workshop led by Esther Polak in Brussels, Feb 2009. www.imal.org/NewBraveWorld

WJ-S is a software and a public performance site, modular, allowing
the WJ-S (web jockeys, artists, enthusiasts and mutants of the web)
to lay live with online content. WJs is a shared and visible navigation
experience. The WJs take control of a multi screen device and simultaneously
surf in multiple browser windows at once. WJs is an immersive experience
in the stream.

WJS has been presented at Dis-patch Festival, Belgrade, Centre Pompidou,
Paris, Ritz Hôtel, Vendôme luxury live, Paris, Festival
Ososphère, Strasbourg, Mapping Festival MAMCO Geneva, Aires
de Conflu(X)ence, Sibiu, Romania & Luxembourg, Mal Au Pixel,
Paris, Gawlab, Dakar Biennale, Il faut brûler pour briller,
Paris, Festival RIAM, Marseille, Maison Pop, Montreuil, Kibela,
Maribor, Kiberpipa, Ljubljana, Ensad, Paris, MNAC, Bucarest, Le
arti in citta Festival, Perugia, Plektrum Festival, Tallinn, Main
demoparty festival / Marseille, Nuits sonores, Lyon...
Following the steps of DJs and VJs, WJ s (weejays,
webjays, webjockeys ...) directly draw their sources from the Web
and mix the network flow in real time. The WJs/essions are organized
indoors or outdoors, in a public space, in front of an audience.
Taking out the network from the web
In less than 20 years the World Wide Web, a space of converging
multimedia praxis, has become a vast experimentation and exploration
ground with countless artistic ramifications. As it is often related
to a solitary adventure led in a very intimate relationship with
ones machine, the virtual experience is seldom extended to
another dimension of time-space. Projects involving network actors
only take place in closed circles, within the network, and hardly
ever outside, within a live performance environment. The idea of
the WJs project is to disrupt this tendency by offering a
strong, captivating, sensual and slightly altered cybernetic surf
where the feeling of being immerged in the flow and the extreme
pleasure of browsing are shifted to a live performance environment.
Individual and collaborative online productions (in different geographical
sites) become collective events (to which an audience is invited).
In this way, Wjs become flux stalkers and offer things to see, hear,
feel, observe and think about, through a progressive and dynamic
process. Guided by their critical spirit and their own personal
outlook, they reveal the fragrance of the Web, defragment and confront
worlds that make the invisible become visible
Anne Roquigny (www.roquigny.info),
media arts curator, has specialised during
these last ten years in the production, coordination, promotion
and curating of hybrid digital projects linked to networks and to
the Internet.
After devising and organising for 3 years (1995_98) the cultural
programs of events of the Web Bar, an internet café cum art
gallery in Paris , she joins in 1999 the CICV Pierre Schaeffer,
one of the first french new media center where she's working as
artistic co-ordinator and curator of the international urban multimedia
arts festivals : nuits-savoureuses.cicv.fr www.interferences.org and then as co-director of the place with Pierre Bongiovanni (www.bongiovanni.info).
From 2002 to 2004, Anne Roquigny is in charge of the general co-ordination
of the preliminary project for a future Digital Arts Center in Paris,
dedicated to digital production and to electronic music, at la Gaité
Lyrique. gaite.arscenic.org.
Anne Roquigny is now developping the web performances project WJS www.wj-s.org and
is parallely co-coordinating with Peter Sinclair and Jérôme
Joy the project Locus Sonus www.locusonus.org a research lab specialized in audio art and it's relation to space
and networked audio systems. Ecole supérieure d'Art d'Aix
