The body, as a place for change or translation, expressed both intimately and in different spaces. Antonin de Bemels tests solo survival techniques, using his animated alter ego. Isabelle Levenez features a young woman by the sea, practicing an unusual private ritual. Almagul Menlibayeva films a shamanic rite in a post-soviet industrial landscape. Mumtoz Kamolzoda films an ancient ceremony in Tajikistan: If a woman loses her fiancé before the wedding, she will first have to marry a tree before she can ever marry another man, in order to be released from a bad aura. Eléonore de Montesquiou films the behaviour of a young crowd on the beaches of the Paljassaare peninsula, a former military base. Henrike Meyer and Thérèse Nilsen feel space with the body, in an abandoned camp due to relocation for cheap workforce. Guzman De Yarza presents a fight, which becomes a group struggle. Maya Schweizer uses images of Israeli women liberated by dancing. Lutz Gregor choreographs a Raft of the Medusa, where bodies fight and become moving figures. Reynold Reynolds explores the thoughts of a woman trapped in an apartment, where time becomes circular and repetitive. Jason Workman performs risky acrobatics in a staircase. Pierre Coulibeuf presents a parody, based on choreographed moves by Angelin Preljocaj, in Rudy Ricciotti's Black Palace. Characters break the rules of choreography and cinema and fantasy puts reality to test.

The individual and the group: social, political and economic grading Nadia Hironaka and Matthew Suib present an epic animated and wild travel through a devastated urban landscape where wildlife has taken over. William Wegman films in a New York park a society made of human beings and dogs, each handling their business, in a fair distribution of daily work and pleasure. Bertrand Dezoteux presents a social fable of a digital society where hybrid animals gather and move around pointlessly in various landscapes, ending however in a protesting march. Umut Sakallioglu parades through different processions, deconstructing the rite of protesting. Egle Budvytyte reveals a society, which identity manifests through often quite opaque behaviour in public spaces- could it be a cult, a political or social group, or quite simply our society? The Centre of Attention orchestrates the docile audience of an art gallery, from a friendly greeting to a barehanded struggle. Manuel Saiz presents an effective crowd reallocating and grading system, thanks to a plug area. Danilo Prnjat pays two hundred men, asking them to gather in front of the biggest perfume shop in Belgrade and to wander inside the shop, underlining the contradiction between a liberal economy and a post-socialist and patriarchal society. Nooshid Farhid films a young man, who looks totally adrift in an urban area, emptied from any social link. Anna Ådahl choreographs a couple in an apartment, whose gestures are similar to some they could have among a crowd. Those images are interrupted with movie excerpts showing crowd gatherings. Daya Cahen observes the summer camp of Putin’s youth movement. Propaganda and group activities can function as an instrument in a process of mass radicalization.

The family, as an ambiguous space for both alienation and emotion. Vaughan Pilikian walks across the empty spaces of houses that seem to only be inhabited by the phantasmal presence of television screens. Cecilia Lundqvist draws a housewife, who is trying to persuade herself she is happy. Franciasca Grilli presents the relationship between a young woman and her grandfather, in a unusual way. Emmanuelle Antille presents three generations of women locked in a house, the intimate and familial ritual. Axel Peterson explores the Hotel Alexandria in Egypt; where old Europe slowly disappears and its inhabitants prepare their farewell. Soufiane Adel presents his family at the hospital, where his grandfather has just died. Avenilo Sala watches a football game with no beginning and no end, and where the ball is on fire. Ben Rivers films a family in a wild area, out of time.

July 2006. War breaks out in Lebanon. A new war, but not just an additional one. A war, which destroys our generation’s momentum and hopes for peace. We do not know what to write anymore, which stories to tell, which images to show. We ask ourselves “what can cinema do about it ?” We decide to really address this question. We leave for Beirut with an “icon”, an actress, who for us embodies cinema: Catherine Deneuve, She meets the famous Lebanese actor, Rabih Mroue. Together they will cross the war-struck regions. Their presence and their exchange will, we hope, bring back beauty to our eyes. An unpredictable and unexpected adventure then begins…
