While coming to realization with certain failed utopias, this session
questions the possibility of “living together”. Ane Lan stages
himself as various women of the world and he raises questions of
the images and ideas of ethnicity and multiculturalism within the
concept of a global economy. Diego del Pozo Barriuso presents a
piece about exchange, affective work and the relationship between
economy and affection. Erik Moskowitz et Amanda Trager put into
doubt the notion of utopia. Along with Joan Jonas, the characters
sing their dialogue in a space where each object is represented
by a photo. Shelly Silver’s video is made up of street interviews
done throughout NYC. Mixing political questions with more broadly
existential ones, the video focuses on the tension between individual
and collective responsibility. |

Unresolved works, “deja-vu” scenes, distant or forgotten cinematographic
quotes. Sarah Beddington offers a meeting in triptych. Eun Woo Cho
presents different types of human encounters and separations in
a strange place. Vicente Blanco features a space that is impossible
to film, an encounter made possible through different mediums. Hakima
El Djoudi films what looks like a point of no return in the history
of a couple. Miina Hujala also films a couple, with a feeling of
“deja-vu”, until the woman shows her real face. Slava Leontjev
stages two characters face to face, silently looking at each other
and presents an enigmatic private meeting, with an Hitckockian allusion.
With Van Barnes, Zackary Drucker, Mariah Garnett and A.L. Steiner,
two trans-identified people, look at each other, hurl a series of
insults at each other, and use the different levels of romantic
language. J. Tobias Anderson presents two men on a road questioning
differing ideas on how to approach a problem. The questions they
ask themselves are simple, but the possibilities of interpretation
are more complex. Angelica Mesiti films in an Australian town a
story about “stories” and uses the video to play with cinematographic
codes. In a poolroom, Sheena Macrae moves the camera so as to suggest
the beginning of a plot. Delphine Kreuter writes a franco-american
dialogue, about an arrival in New York. Ra di Martino presents a
film that appears to be part of a feature film, perhaps one that
we have seen, but ca not quite remember the name. Cabello/Carceller
have an excerpt of Apocalypse Now re-interpreted by a Filipino woman,
and places her in the original location of the film.

Works about revolt, violence and resistance against war. Benjamin
Ducroz draws strange figures in the forest. Gil and Moti Nader film
a violist who plays a hybrid reconstructed composition of two national
anthems. Teboho Edkins mixes images created on Second Life with
images filmed at Kinshasa, where a presidential candidate is being
jailed for having talked openly about the lack of democracy. Elise
Florenty compares two pictures, showing signs of what gets destructed
and what remains, in reference to past and present history of Argentina.
Julieta Hanono presents a very short story, about a pullover that
protects feet from the prison cold. Mario Opazo sets a performance
in the Saharan desert; he explains how his mother saved his life
during the Pinochet coup d’état. Anna Odgen-Smith finds video
recordings filmed by her mother from 1989 to 1995 in Lebanon. In
1989, she was 5 years-old. Andres Felipe Uribe Cardenas reinterprets
a work by Goya on war disasters. A Columbian senator describes a
barbarian act. Lamia Joreige tells her personal experience of war,
starting from notes written or filmed during the summer 2006 in
Lebanon. Hisham Bizri’s film is a meditation on the insanity of
war and violence in Lebanon. Marjoleine Boonstra directs “Sa Null”
in a Bosnian and Croatian refugee camp, during the war in Ex-Yugoslavia,
portraits of men and women who have lost everything. Through a simple
mirroring device and the indirect look of the camera, a word can
be heard again. In “Keep on stepping”, the director is in New
Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and films those who have lost their
private property, in a devastated town.
