A contemporary archeology of various locations, which seem to be
waiting forever, locations only related to past events. Timo Katz
and Jan Fuchs modify the visual aspect of an urban space and offer
parallel and multiple perspectives. Michael Miska Knapek films a
public place during 15 hours, separates the footage in spatiotemporal
fragments and rearrange a new image, offering a condensed vision
of recorded time. Tuomo Rainio presents the still frame of an urban
landscape in which anything that moves leaves a trace on the image,
resulting in an animated picture. Behnam Kamrani films a man and
the apparition of a woman dancing in a space covered with mirrors.
Johanna Domke films men and women, waiting in public places. Time
and space are suspended, so as to put forward the mental landscape
of those waiting. Charly Nijenshon shows men looking like castaways
on a salted lake in Bolivia. Rui Silveira explores a picture, by
both isolating and linking elements. Lina Selander films the region
of Portbou, the last location Walter Benjamin visited before he
committed suicide. Sound and images repeat over and over again,
along with testimonies from refugees. Luis Valdovino and Dan Boord
leave the Longmont Colorado gas station, which was moved twice to
protect it from certain destruction, to follow the same path as
Jack Kerouac and Robert Franck, in what becomes a rebuilding of
the United States. Mehdi Meddaci films a stumbling architecture
on the Mediterranean coast, observes the extremely slow movement
of bodies, the throwing of a rock as a link to reality. |

Film footage and cinematographic quotes are reinterpreted and reorganized;
allowing for a reflection around cinema and a space for plastic
artists whose iconoclast work is often in-between. Before the story
unfolds, the arranging and assembling of scenes have an ambivalent
and underlying meaning. Dave Griffiths intertwines Irishmen, the
Nasa and football champions, with superior intelligence coming from
outer space. Volker Schreiner uses the loud speaker, as to reveal
the disturbing part of communication and speeches. Eli Cortiñas
Hidalgo uses the figure of Gena Rowlands, chased by the persecuting
ringing of a phone, a voice is heard talking to her as someone who
seems to be a mother, a dialogue with oneself. Christoph Girardet
shows how memory would look like was it made of cinematographic
fragments. Paulette Phillips focuses on the sign language and on
signs translated through cinema when a female character about to
commit a crime. Noe Sendas builds an internal monologue, which underlines
the distance between a feeling and what triggered it. Les Leveque
rearranges the film Giant, the epic story of Texas, oil and racism. |

The architecture of power, as a fiction in reality. Romana Schmalisch
combines in the form of a collage Soviet avant-garde buildings from
the 1920s, with film and audio recordings from the late 1930s, in
which the subject of changes in the city of Moscow plays a central
role. Christian Barani and Guillaume Reynard have filmed Astana,
the new capital of Kazakhstan, following the will of President Nazarbaiev.
They try to explore how fiction preceded reality, as for instance
during Darejan Omirbaev’s shooting of a film. They also delve
into the flipside of things: from a construction site building to
a small house about to be expropriated. Through an ex-soviet booming
oligarchy, they paint a melancholic and poetic portait of globalization.
In 1998, seven years after the country’s independence, the autocratic
Kazakh president Noursoultan Nazarbaiev decides to change the capital
city from Almaty to Astana, located in the northern steppes. High-rise
buildings emerge, financed by oil exports. The film starts with
a presidential speech delivered in 1997 about Kazakhstan future,
praising “the three social layers, the well off, the middle-class
and the poor”, the infinite promises of a liberal economy. Christian
Barani and Guillaume Reynard witness the development a new society,
in the ruins of affluent wealth. |

At the crossroads of public and private spaces, an ideal space and
a space manipulated by politics. Romana Schmalisch combines in the
form of a collage Soviet avant-garde buildings from the 1920s, with
film and audio recordings from the late 1930s, in which the subject
of changes in the city of Moscow plays a central role. Thomas Leon
presents a film, whose form and structure as well as its use of
sound and digital media, give an emotional atmosphere to a snowy
imperturbable landscape. Seungho Cho studies travel and metamorphosis,
starting from images of people in the subway. Rob Todd studies objects,
their texture and movement. Herman Asselberghs films Brussels. It
is both a manifesto on cinema and the realisation of the ideological
dead-end following 1968. Jérôme Schlomoff walks across villa K,
which is under construction, in the region of Marrakech. Peter Downsbrough
films the urban environments. The space becomes political, underlined
by an arrangement which gives it its’ order. Niklas Goldbach watches
an unfinished tower near Bangkok, which is part of the ghostly buildings
resulting from the 1997 crisis. Paul Rowley and Tim Blue have rearranged
images of a small American town, adding animated abstract figures
and therefore offering a quantum architecture. Carlo Zanni recreates
an image from a map of houses in a German village and from a horizon
line in Naples filmed with a webcam. Pierre-Yves Clouin flies over
New York, a song reminds of a distant cinematographic presence.
