Gints Gabrans, taking as matter of reflection the set-up of projection, organises a session of collective hypnosis, on a night where there is a full moon. Mateo Mate shows an American general reciting the recipe for the Thanksgiving turkey. Erica Scourti compiles and twists a series of stereotyped speeches from Hollywood films in order to create a rhetorical piece on human condition. Paul Rowley and David Phillips examine the ideas of governance, or social order and of collective representation, through revisiting the Soviet space program of the 1960s and inspired by the theories of Hobbes on the body politic. Mark Boswell reinterprets, with Godard, Camus, Dada and Scorsese, the Saint-Petersburg paradox, a mathematical theory of the C18th, describing a casino game with attractive winnings but the entry price of which is unattainable. Igor Krenz documents the eruption on Polish television in 1985 of slogans calling for boycott of the elections, the result of pirating of a TV antenna by a group of students. Mario Navarro calls before the camera Stafford Beer, father of modern cybernetics, and of a pioneering accounting and information control system that Allende wanted to commission from him in 1971. With Philipp Doering we follow a woman in Berlin, caught between images of her past in the Red Army Factions and those of the football World Cup in 2006. Daya Cahen, through archive images, meets Yevgeni Jugashvili, Stalin’s grandson, whose memory he worshipped, although the man of iron never wanted to meet him and sacrificed his son, Jugashvili’s father, during the Second World War.

JJan Ijäs paints the tragic portrait of a man who, as a young student, saw in 1963 in Teheran Stanley Kubrick’s “Spartacus” and believed in this utopia of revolution. Claire Angelini speaks of an improbable meeting, that of a Vietnamese refugee woman living in Germany and of the Starnberg lake haloed with the mythified memory of Sissi and of Louis II of Bavaria. With Philippe Terrier-Hermann, we are present at the non-meeting between five residents of an Venetian ex-psychiatric hospital transformed into international university research center, each obsessed by problems of community in their respective countries. Raphaël Cuomo and Maria Iorio examine the materialization of national and European migration politics at Lampedusa and the reconfiguration of space and of daily life of this small Italian island. «Sudeuropa» focuses on the conditions of production of images of emergency: journalists and cameramen complete the police set-up which lines up the bodies, presents them in front of the cameras, organizes the staging, gives form to the habitual figures of “clandestine immigrants”, on the southern frontier of Europe.

Antonio MUNTADAS : On Translation : Miedo / Jauf
Experimental documentary | dv | color | 0:52:18
Spain | 2007

September 2006
Between 2003 and 2005 I was working between Tijuana and San Diego on a project that I entitled “On Translation: Fear/Miedo.” Working on this project made me think about the similarities between this situation and that of the south of Spain and the north of Africa, since one represents “the door” to the US and the other “the door” to Europe.
Since the beginning in 2006, as I gather information and compile data in the Strait of Gibraltar territory, I perceive similarities, but great differences as well. Similarities in the trip, the crossing, the survival, the search for a better life, the idealization of consumption, of a construction of a reality that is mediatized many times over…Differences in the complexity added by religion and its influences, on the one hand, and the problematics of terrorism, on the other, all of which are factors of cultural translation on one side of the Strait or the other.
On Translation: Miedo/ Jauf can be approached like a personal construction that seeks to speak of a reality and, at the same time, to construct a metaphor of situations in which translation and interpretation, and not what is said or silence, make up a part of their own narrative. Each project has to face its own context and what this context generates, and not create a mechanistic production on account of the simple fact that certain similar situations and problematics exist. This is one of the reasons why a final time limit for the project cannot be anticipated.

October 2007
On Translation: Miedo/Jauf is a project on the experience and the interpretation of fear and its complexities on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar. On Translation: Miedo/Jauf is not a work on the emigration/ immigration of Africa/Europe. Nor on religion, or on terrorism. Two differentrealities, divided not only by a sea but by border fences and limits on both sides.
The search for the north with its created paradises, which many never find; fear as an emotion/sensation injected into this decision to make the crossing. The construction of the south as a fiction/reality connected to phenomena of the unknown, the exotic and the different.
The attraction experienced by two different realities in which information circulates from mouth to mouth and through the media and stereotypes.
Attempting to understand and perceive a hope in a continent “forgotten” by the western world, Africa as hope for the future. Work in teams and choral interpretation.

Michael Brynntrup bases his series on self directing of the body on internet. The erotic self-portrait vanishes in an anonymous and repetitive frame. Isabell Spengler transposes into cinematographic language a performance of the feminist pop group “Larry Peacock”. Lior Shamriz permutes the voices of three friends meeting by chance in the street, creating a strange and sombre perception of the other. Katarzyna Kozyra directs herself in a pop video, and plays with the clichés of feminine and masculine. Nina Lassila illustrates the phrase of Bourdieu stating that genre is a “lived ideology”. Cabello/Carceller replay sequences taken from a Hollywood film, and explore the dynamics of power and of subordination which lurk behind the structures of genre in the capitalist model of society. Aasa Elzén and Markus Wetzel create an androgynous character played by one or by the other, it doesn’t matter which, man or woman. Nicolas Jenkins films Breyer P-Orridge and his partner Lady Jaye who have undergone a series of plastic surgery operations to eliminate their physical differences, and create a new genre, the pandrogyne. With Almagul Menlibayeva, young urban Kazakh women eat a sheep’s head in a restaurant in Almaty. This meal provokes their transformation; they become supernatural creatures of the steppes.
