The installation «Minimo macho, minimo fêméa», consists in a double projection of rolls of the film «No quarto da Vanda», and shows us a view alternating exterior and the respective interior scenes of houses in the area of Fontainhais, Lisbonne. In this way, it documents and intensively illustrates the existence of immigrants of the ex-colonies, in a clear and calm manner.

The works shown have a direct critical connection to the growth of the information network and new imaging technology: video games, Internet, GPS, surveillance video. Michael Takeo Magruder examines the archives produced on a daily basis by the media, and the whole dynamic of the informational structures which transmit the process. Day by day, this work deconstructs the BBC information service supplied by Internet, in a 3D realm in constant evolution traversed by multiple points of view. Matthew Ostrowski goes all over the web from random points of departure and accumulates indiscriminately a flow of data to reach a non-existent place: an experience masquerading as an environment, like the internet itself. “Logo Hallucination” uses image recognition technologies to detect subliminal kinds of logos or emblems, most of the time involuntarily hidden in visual environment or in all Internet images. Jacky Sawatzky develops a social metronome by the way of a motion capture process. Jordan Crandall performs an analysis of spectatorship and identi.cation that is resonant with the new regime of mediatized security, an “unconscious security”. He combines live-action video, surveillance footage, military tracking software, and explores the impact of the new security culture on subjectivity and identity. Gwen MacGregor tracks with a GPS her activities in Toronto and New York, applying to herself the principle of traceability and global surveillance. Michael Graham offers an analytical approach to
the video medium. “Rotations and frame divisions” is a video installation that shows a camera filming by following a set of pre-drawn graphical instructions. This video appears as an axiom about the comprehension of reality. Ubermorgen’s installation shows us in the new alienated universe of online video game player factories. In China, more than 2000 factories hire people (around 500 000) in order to play Warcraft night and day. The players provide “virtual gold”: hardware or full characters then sold to European or American players via EBay. These players are called “Chinese gold farmers”. JoDi modifiese the extremely violent video game Max Payne, compiling a series of “cheats” (game alterations) and intervening in the structure of the programme to create absurd perspectives and effects which impact on the realism of the game. Joan Leandre develops a software project the aim of which is to transform original programmes in auto-generated simulation environments. The parameters of four fiight simulator programmes are altered so they are almost no longer manipulable by human pilots. Roberto Aguirrezabala develops with “Easyfriend” a hybrid project between cinema and net art, exploring the different forms of narration, auto-projection and inter-subjectivity on Internet.

Antonio Muntadas and Marshall Reese worked with American presidential campaign techniques. They show the emergence of the political strategies and marketing techniques involved in manipulating the American television campaign. In a montage absent of all commentary, the candidates are degraded, sold like commercial products. Tony Cokes creates a montage of quotes from George W. Bush’s “State of the Union” address, in which Bush insists upon the legitimacy of a war against Saddam Hussein’s regime. In «From the Horse’s mouth», Nisi Jacobs breaks apart a slip of the tongue made by Laura Bush at the White House. Stuart Pound uses clips from a televised interview with Tony Blair after the declaration of war on Iraq. After making this irreversible decision, the political debate plunges into an atmosphere of marimba and bird song. On New Year’s Eve 2005/2006, Immanuel Weinlad filmed the Aryan headquarters of Ramstein, the main of.ce for American Aryan forces in Europe and headquarters for NATO. “Green Sky” plays upon the look of the greenish sky created by infrared cameras when represented on a television screen. They mark the collective unconscious since the first war in Iraq. Michel François’s video was recorded in a single night at the FOX American television network studios. The camera roams through abandoned cameras and television screens. Broersen and Lukacs direct a spatial collage compiled of innumerable television images. We travers still images that make up a landscape of media, the global paradise available to everyone : counterfeit facades and a hellish landscape. Erik Bünger enlightens us to the lack of clarity in television interviews. It is impossible to know to whom the camera or the commentator is referring, yet they all speak of “him.”

Ulf Aminde stayed more than two weeks in an IKEA store, asking customers to take part in a film. The film-making process becomes more significant than the resulting video. This standardized universe becomes the context for individual variations, from the most stereotyped to the less conventional. Hans Op de Beeck constructs the tragicomic portrait of three groups of table-companions, on three different occasions: a group of old people at a bare table having coffee and biscuits, a wedding meal with the families of bride and groom, a birthday dinner for a father and head of the family in a kitsch interior. Susanna Schoenberg runs in the longest parking garage in Europe, as a reflection on history and society appears on-screen in subtitles. Koen They films in an uncut sequence an installation of books, alarm clocks, extinguished candles, over which 20 000 snails are crawling, intercut with sound extracts from speeches given at the installation’s preview.

Albert Quesada improvises on the Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach, played by Glenn Gould. The music and the artist compose a parallel path, in a constant but discontinued dialog,
which changes our approach to perception. Miranda Pennell films twenty dancers, their gaze fixed at the camera as if their lives depended on it; the movement of the camera becomes the motion of the world. Antonin de Bemels deconstructs and reconstructs the movement of the dancer in 4 counts through
the magic of editing. However, his feet are fixed to the ground, and there is no other horizon than his own body... Rafael Gallar interprets the «Theorem of Infinite Monkeys,» according to which one monkey, randomly typing on a keyboard, will eventually write a book. This theorem proves how improbable it is that such a thing could happen, but demonstrates above all that it is even more improbable to contradict the laws of statistics.

Dressed in white, Ruth Baettig becomes a figure who runs, short of breath, through an urban landscape. She completes an athletic journey amongst various sculptures by well-known artists. Bertram Dhellemmes and Ines Birkhan present a composite storytelling video installation – are superimposed the meeting of the she-Krampus (a legendary character from the Austrian Alps), the new inhabitants of the mountains, and the tribulations of Tchumuki, a rebel employee of the silence factory. In Yvan Pousset’s work, the video frame unveils a character dressed in red, roaming through a forest. Blind to those who would scrutinize him, he follows his activity without taking a break- a modern-day Sisyphus. Mathilde Mestrallet uses her body as a subject- a silhouette traversing the landscape. A young woman runs alongside bushes, hiding herself and attempting to escape. A gunshot rings out and stops her in her tracks. Mathias Delfau creates an equilibrium between narration and motif. His piece strives to allow the viewer to spend time before the very feature that is contingent upon the gaze which ultimately carries him. Seoungho Cho sheds light upon the subjective experience of “seeing.”

The installation by Herve Trioreau refers to Dziga Vertov’s film, “Man With A Camera”, and short circuits its thematic. Myriam Yates explores two obsolete sites in a North American town. These two sites form the locus of a space for reflection and experimentation on the disappearance of cultural sites and the obsolescence of public spaces. The installation by Amy Siegel consists of reconstructions, frame by frame, of scenes taken from the East German National Film Institute (DEFA). Jason Dee extracts a short sequence of Murnau’s majestic film, “Dawn”, creating a 360 degree panoramic view. Marika Orenius explores the societal, mental and psychological structures that control our existence. She reveals the unconscious and dreams balanced against the parameters of our society.

Yves Coussement compiles in a video sequence the advertising representations of different cities of the world. These cities broadcast on the web PowerPoint presentations. Apparently raw and obviously didactic, the technique reveals its dubiousness when tourists read aloud each slogan. Zhenchen Liu presents Shangai as the city is conceived, thought, imagined, in models and digital images by advertising professionals; and demonstrates otherwise the real city. Beatriz Caravaggio films in 2006 in Cuba a series of billboards used as propaganda from the beginning of the Cuban Revolution transmit its social and political ideology to the people. Julien Lousteau evokes Lake Vostok, imprisoned under the Antarctic ice, isolated from the rest of the world for millions of years, and, in the region of the Three Gorges, the project of the biggest hydroelectric dam in the world. From a region between destruction and construction, Antoine Boutet has brought back images of immobile beauty, which he unveils like a series of paintings.
