Tsai Ming Liang was born in Malaysia in 1957. His films granted numerous awards, including the Golden Lion in Venice for "Vive l’Amour" (1994), the Silver Bear for "The River", and 5 Fipresci-Prizes in Berlin. Since his first feature film "Rebels of the Neon God" (1992) up to the breathtaking "I Don’t Want to Sleep Alone", Tsai Ming Liang’s films always feature a cool, sensitive vision of life, human relations and solitude. He is considered to be one of the masters of contemporary cinema. Here he offers a very free and personal interpretation of Puccini´s "Madame Butterfly".
