Illallinen Fiction, Moving Image | 16mm | color | 4'47'' | Finland | 2007 © Riikka Kuoppala A man meets a woman in order to have a dinner together. An odd atmosphere surrounds the scene. The woman enters his apartment, the man takes her coat off and they sit beside the dinner table. A tentative atmosphere is present till the end, when the woman reveals her true face. Miina is a video and media artist. She is currently studying in The University of art and design in Helsinki for her master’s degree. She has made several short video works from 2003 to 2007 and a couple of film works from which The Dinner (2007) is the latest. She is interested in the theory and structure of moving image, not only as a filmic and static way of making things and ideas visible, but also as an inner hidden process in which we read and interpret things. Artist statement In this small scene-like piece I mimic the way motion picture reality affects emotions and I handle the interpretative way of producing an image of someone and how it is attached to the notion that by communicating with someone else we also communicate with ourselves and try to figure out our own thoughts as well. Our perception of the situation is always attached to our dreams, hopes and fears. The element of introvertness, sets the impression that we’ll have of others, in question.Cultural norms are active in our mundane life and it is not seldom that we find ourselves in situations that try to imitate motion picture conduct and our aspiration to something unike and different is always burdened with our knowledge of the cultural model.
